Shopify collaborator account overview

Running a Shopify store can be a collaborative effort. You can rely on your staff members or partner with others who bring the skills and expertise to help grow your store. Usually, owners do this through the Shopify Partner Program. Through this program, you can connect with skilled professionals in web design, marketing, copywriting, and more, who can assist you in setting up and developing your e-commerce store.

To do this, the collaborator you work with needs access to your store. You can do this through their own Shopify Partner dashboard.

How to give collaborator access in Shopify

Here’s a quick rundown of the steps to give collaborators access to your Shopify store:

  1. Set up the collaborator access code.

  2. Receive a collaborator access code.

  3. Give your collaborator the requested access code.

  4. Wait for an access request from the collaborator.

  5. Review and moderate permissions.

  6. Accept request.

Let’s take a look at these steps in more detail:

1. Set up collaborator access code.

Before you can add a collaborator to your store, they need to request access. To do this, you need to give them a request access code, which is a four-digit code that lets you know the person requesting access is legitimate.

First, go to Settings > Users and permissions and scroll down to Collaborators. You will see a check box. Click Only people with a collaborator request code can request access

2. Receive a collaborator access code.

In the collaborator screen, you’ll see a random number generator where you will receive a unique four-digit code.

3. Give your collaborator the code.

Give your code to your chosen collaborator so they can request access to your store.

How many collaborators can you have on Shopify?

As of March 2026, you can have unlimited collaborators on Shopify [1]. Through collaborator accounts, you can grant access to Shopify Partners and freelancers.

4. Wait for an access request from your collaborator.

The next step is over to your collaborator, who uses the code you’ve generated to send you an access request. Wait for an email or a notification via your Shopify app.

5. Review and moderate permissions.

Once you receive a notification of a collaborator looking for access, click Review request. At this stage, you can review the permissions they requested and either accept, decline, or alter the permissions. From the permissions list, you can check or uncheck each as necessary.

6. Accept request.

When everything is as you like, click Accept request, and you grant your collaborator access to your store with the permissions you’ve outlined.

How to remove a collaborator from your account

If you stop working with a collaborator, you can remove their access and permissions so they can no longer access your Shopify account and store.

  1. Head to Settings > Users and permissions.

  2. Next, click on the name of the collaborator you want to remove from your account and click Remove collaborator account.

  3. Before clicking Remove, you may have to re-enter your password to confirm the request.
