Grok is xAI's chatbot, integrated directly into X with the ability to search and analyze live social media conversations.
Grok is free for limited use, with expanded access available through X Premium plans which start at $3 per month, or a standalone SuperGrok subscription, which costs $30 per month as of March 2026 [1, 2].
Grok's personality is intentionally less formal than some competitors, offering more direct, unfiltered responses.

Grok is an AI chatbot released in 2023 by Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI [3]. Modeled after the book Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, xAI gave Grok a distinctive personality and what it calls a “rebellious streak” that allows it to provide direct, unfiltered responses, in contrast to other AI assistants with stricter content filtering.
Like other chatbots, Grok can answer questions, create images, summarize articles, brainstorm ideas, help write and debug with coding, and more. You can use Grok to:
Write emails.
Answer questions.
Integrate with Google Drive.
Provide AI companions with different personas.
Chat via voice.
Understand images.
Grok Imagine, released in January 2026, can create both images and videos [4]. It can generate realistic images, produce text and logos accurately, and create convincing human portraits. You can type prompts, use the sketchpad feature to draw your ideas, or upload images for Grok to edit or use as inspiration.
Through its integration with X (formerly known as Twitter), Grok can pull information from posts and answer questions directly on the platform. You can access Grok via a web browser and mobile app, with access to a basic version without a subscription.
The current Grok AI lineup includes Grok 3 Beta, which was released in February 2025, and Grok 4, which was released in July 2025 [5, 6]. Each version serves different use cases and includes its own set of variants or tools.
Grok 3: Designed for faster responses and general-purpose use, with a smaller context window
Grok 4: Can handle and reason across book-length documents, but is slower than Grok 3
Grok 4 Heavy: Considers multiple hypotheses at once, enabling it to perform better on challenging tasks
Grok Imagine: Generates and edits videos and animates images
Grok is a verb that means "to understand profoundly and intuitively," according to Merriam-Webster [7]. The word originates in the science fiction novel Stranger in a Strange Land, where the main character uses it when speaking his native Martian language.
Elon Musk created Grok as an alternative to AI chatbots with stricter content policies, emphasizing real-time information and fewer restrictions. This approach shapes several of Grok's key differentiators.
X integration: One of Grok’s defining characteristics is its integration with X, allowing real-time access to X content. This makes it particularly knowledgeable about breaking news and social media trends. As a user on X, you can also ask Grok questions in post comments or direct messages. Grok uses X data to personalize interactions, creating a unique experience for each user.
Advanced reasoning: Grok’s “Heavy” mode enables multi-step reasoning that allows it to evaluate multiple hypotheses before determining the best answer. With Grok 4 Heavy, you should get more accurate answers to challenging questions.
Performance: With Grok 3, xAI closed the performance gap with competing chatbots, as it posted competitive results on math and science benchmarks. The model introduced Think, a reasoning mode that breaks down complex problems step-by-step before answering.
Research and reasoning: Grok's DeepSearch agent provides real-time sourcing from across the web, synthesizing conflicting information and delivering detailed reports.
Content moderation: Grok's lighter content moderation can allow the generation of controversial content, including public figures and copyrighted characters, raising concerns about deep-fakes and non-consensual imagery.
Virtual companions: Grok offers interactive AI companions with distinct personalities, animated avatars, and voice interactions. Companions include Ani, Rudi, and Valentine.
